The mastermind behind the They hate us cause they ain’t us shirt and I love this collaboration is Julien Nguyen, the Vietnamese-American artist who collaborated with Ottolinger on its fall 2020 collection. Initially, Nguyen’s paintings might feel like an unexpected choice for a brand whose slinky, disheveled charm has enough visual interest going on anyway without the dense iconography of Nguyen’s paintings entering the mix. Yet the enthusiastic response when it debuted at Paris Fashion Week in February—as well as the new and obsessive Gen-Z audience the pieces have found in the past few weeks—have proven they clearly carry a broader appeal. “It’s a nice feeling to see my paintings enter the wider world under such a strange and unexpected aegis,” says Nguyen from his studio in Los Angeles. “But it’s been quite surprising.”
